promethius… icarus… what do these greek myths have to do with sci fi?? a hell of a lot according to mike jones. mike is my new local hero, a screen media academic with a penchant for technology and all things geeky… yes, when i grow up i want to be like mike.
as part of our exploration of sci-fi conventions, award winning australian director michael rymer, spoke of his experience re-interpreting battlestar galactica for a modern audience. it is a little known fact that michael actually trained as a sound designer when at film school.
at the end of the week we had to produce a short from a pre-determined script. 2 hours to shoot, 4 hours to cut and 2 hours for sound design.
this is the result.
so i flew out on monday morning. hungover as all hell and anxious about how to manage the sydney move. the constant drone of the plane was making me feel nauseous, i could hear the jet engines in my stomach.
my mind was burdened by thoughts of possible failures and shortcomings in the year to come. i was starting to feel the pressure of the opportunity. all i had on hand was a small stereo recorder, so i taped some sounds. here’s the result…
the moral of the story, don’t get loaded 7 hours before you have to fly - it fucks with your head.
PS. good headphones for this one people. laptop speakers = don’t even bother
PPS. equipment used: Zoom H4n, Ableton Suite 8, Novation Launchpad and the inability to sleep due to time zone differences.
AFTRS - a place to be
sydney is upon me, flying out in two and a half weeks to setup shop and prepare for my course. the catalyst for this flurry of intense activity was an offer to study at the national film school, AFTRS.
the AFTRS mission statement is:
“To advance the success and sustainability of Australia’s screen and broadcast industries by developing the skills and knowledge of talented individuals and undertaking leading-edge research. AFTRS aims to transform the abilities of individuals and strengthen the skills base of the industry.”
… i guess that makes me ‘talented’.
hello cruel world
after years of avoiding ‘blog culture’, a blog suddenly seems appropriate. i’m moving to sydney to study sound design and explore ‘idea generation’ in a modern digital paradigm… if that’s not blog worthy, i don’t know what is.
this is a space for thinking out loud, collating inspiration and sharing with all who care to listen.
here’s a classic bit of flash animation with an outstanding soundtrack.
